Elkhart Public Library is pleased to introduce our new director, Lisa Guedea Carreño!
Lisa comes to us from Goshen College, where she was the director of the Harold and Wilma Good Library. She lives in Dunlap with her husband, Sonny, and daughter, Genevieve. They have two cats, Sadie and LOBS (named by Genevieve; an acronym for Light Orange Blossom Sunshine). Sonny works at Ludwig Drums by day, and plays drums/percussion in several local bands many nights and weekends.
Born in Chicago, Lisa spent most of her childhood in Denver, and her youth in a small Texas town called Alice, which is where she became friends with Sonny. After high school they went their separate ways but remained friends. They became reacquainted in the ‘90s, and were married in 1998 – 22 years after they met.
Lisa attended Hesston College in Kansas, then Goshen College, and earned her Master of Library Science degree from Simmons College in Boston. She worked as a law firm librarian in New Hampshire and a corporate librarian in Madison, Wisconsin before returning to her undergrad alma mater to serve as Director of the Good Library at Goshen College.
Her hobbies include singing (her undergraduate degree is in vocal music performance), writing, and hosting Noteworthy, a weekly radio show (Saturdays at 5 pm, resuming in September) on the Goshen College Radio station 91.1 The Globe, WGCS.
Lisa is excited about beginning her new adventure as Director of the Elkhart Public Library. In a recent Elkhart Truth interview, she said, “[W]hen I interviewed for the position, it was obvious that the EPL staff members I met are passionate about public service. … Likewise, the Board seems very supportive of the mission and work of the library. This is a great combination of assets that will help the library continue to meet the needs — both current and emerging — of the communities it serves, even in these challenging economic times.”
While staff and Board were sad to say goodbye to retiring Director Deb Stewart, we also look forward to working with Lisa. “We are impressed by what we have seen so far,” said one staff member. “Lisa is very approachable and willing to listen. She also has a great sense of humor.”
Everyone is invited to join us in welcoming our new Director at an open house on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at the Main Library. Drop in any time between 4:00 and 6:00 pm.
