Fiction writing group fosters creativity

Ashley Knapp was looking for a group of fellow writers to bounce ideas off of and when she couldn’t find what she was looking for, she decided to start a group of her own.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on second and fourth Mondays of the month, the Elkhart Fiction Faction will meet at the downtown library to share ideas, discuss processes and share pieces they’re working on. According to Knapp, there’s no requirement of previously published works.

“The group is good for a hobbyist who would enjoy a social, no-to-low cost activity that would let them be involved in and contribute to the Elkhart art community,” she says.

Knapp was previously a member of the Fort Wayne Writer’s Guild and said she saw that group flourish and it now has several published novelists.

“A local group offers help in a way an online group does not because of the real-time reactions an author can notice when performing their work and the stronger interest people have in helping others succeed when they know them as a person and not a screen name,” Knapp says.

Feedback on work is always welcomed and constructive, she says.

“By thinking critically about fiction writing, everyone’s work will be improved by involvement in the group,” Knapp says.

Those interested in becoming a member can simply show up to the first meeting or contact Knapp by email ashaknapp@gmail.com.
