Start finding your story

Finding your family history is easy with Elkhart Public Library. As easy as finding your dad in the next room.

We have all of the free resources you need to start digging in and finding your ancestors, their stories and more.

If you’re new to searching for your family history, check out our guide on how to get started researching your family tree.

Ancestry Library Edition is available inside any of our library locations, while sites like HeritageQuest, Family Search and Fold3 are available anywhere from our Digital Library. Other sites like RootsWeb and USGenWeb Project are also part of the digital collection.

Visit our Downtown library to find our Local History section, which has city directories, yearbooks, cemetery records and death records to look at in-house.

Once you get started, you might need help going deeper and that’s where our research assistance can come in. Our reference librarians are ready to help you by searching our newspaper or obituary archives. This can come in handy when trying to verify the stories that have been passed down for generations.

Don’t have a library card? Sign up here and start searching. You never know what you’ll find.
