Elkhart Public Library’s Growing Readers tutoring program helps preschoolers get on track for kindergarten and gives a boost to kindergarten to 2nd grade students who are falling behind in their school’s core reading curriculum. We empower parents to help their child meet their literacy goals.
Before signing up, please read the following FAQs about Growing Readers to know what to expect.
How soon can a student start Growing Readers?
• Growing Readers has a waitlist, but most students get in within 1-2 months of signing up.
Who is eligible to participate in Growing Readers?
• Elkhart Public Library patrons and students who attend Elkhart schools, including homeschoolers in our district.
• Children who are at least 3 years old up to second graders.
What will the student be learning?
• Using fun activities, games and books, students will be working on pre-reading and other age-appropriate literacy skills to help them grow toward the level of expectation for their age/grade level, according to the Indiana State Standards.
When and where does tutoring take place?
• Sessions take place in the lower level of the downtown library at 300 S. Second Street, Elkhart.
• Students have a weekly appointment between the hours of 12:30 and 6 p.m.
What is my role as a parent/caregiver?
• Parents/caregivers are expected to read to their child at least 5 times per week while the child is enrolled in Growing Readers.
• Parents/caregivers are involved during the lesson, playing games and watching the instructor support the student. This helps the parents/caregivers more effectively support the students at home.
• Parents/caregivers need to bring their library card each week to check out the books used during the session. This allows them to use the books at home to reinforce the skills learned that week. If you don’t have one, sign up here or we’ll help you get one.
How much does it cost?
• There is no cost to participate.
