LocationElkhart Truth Collection; People Pictures - Brown, Clinton Arthur
Picture CaptionInterior of Clinton Arthur Brown's makeshift home. 9/17/1976 Clinton Brown, the Elkhart Avenue bridge hermit, has been expanding his dwelling for more than a year. Originally, Brown had burrowed into the river bank under the north end of the span. However, before he was arrested Tuesday, he had added a large structure to the front of his dwelling. The deck of the bridge serves as the roof of the hermit's house. Inside, the abode is damp and dark. Brown reportedly planned to install windows in his "house." City workers began dismantling the structure Thursday. See article "Move and Better Food For Hermit of Bridge", Elkhart Truth, Sep 17, 1976, page 15.
