Picture CaptionDingy Gilted Rococo and streaked and faded brocade wall panels hint at the one-time elegance of the Bucklen Opera House. Standing amid dismantled balcony seats, Patrick Horsbrugh, a professor of architecture at Notre Dame, agrees with Elkhartans Mrs. Louis A. Minelli and Waynne Warren Gomel that the old theater is worthy of restoration. Visible above and at right are cables from the theater's domed ceiling and supporting the ceiling over street-level shops. The last movie was shown in the 1,200-seat theater in the autumn of 1956. A cinemascope screen had been installed a year before.

Picture CaptionProbably no building in downtown Elkhart has a more colorful or better-remembered history than the Bucklen Opera House (above). It was built in 1884 the Victorian style. Its auditorium area has been converted to retail use on the ground floor, but the first balcony and areas remain as they originally were constructed.
