7/7/1975 pg. 22 Construction work on the first phase of the new $6 million J.C. Penney Department Store is progressing with the building of the connecting section (above), which will link the 138,000 square foot Penney store with the Concord Mall. Located on the Mishawaka Road side of the Mall, the connecting area will include 33,000 square feet of space which will accommodate new stores and shops. Work on the new Penney store is expected to be completed by spring of 1976. When finished, it will be eight times larger than the J.C. Penney store now located at 307 S. Main St.

Expected to cost several million dollars when completed according to the owners. Dean A. Baker and Associates of Elkhart, the shopping center will have approximately 350,000 square feet of rental space, and will include two major department stores. The site of the shopping center is on U.S. 33, near Mishawaka Road (C.R. 20).
